Duty Ref 341 - Jonathan Kaplan

Up in Johannesburg to receive a reward on Tuesday night and off to Stellenbosch for a club game on wet Wednesday night, Jonathan Kaplan still found time to answer readers' questions.

1. Name: Monde Skeyi

Question: Hi Jonathan.

As an experienced referee just advise me on two things.

Firstly, for us who are refereeing Rugby in Rural Areas of the Eastern Cape (Border), club supporters think that when their club is beaten that it's the referee's fault and put pressure onto the referee.

Secondly, if you call them to a Law Discussion Workshop they don't attend the Workshop but on the field of play complain too much about the referees.

Regards

Jonathan Kaplan: For me the problem is systemic and needs to be taken up at a much higher level than that of the simple referee. Clubs need to be accountable for their supporters and if they can't control them they should not be allowed to play in the leagues. When a player or referees life is put in danger, the game becomes secondary!

Workshops are academic and only help those who want to be helped. Many clubs are happy to stick their heads in the ground or stick with systems that are clearly not serving the game.

2. Name: Alan Austin

Question: Hi There

I would like to know what watch Jonathan Kaplan was wearing in the Australian vs New Zealand game. It was red!

Regards

Jonathan Kaplan: Graham - our Six Nations sponsor. They are awesome timepieces and come highly recommended!

3. Name: Derek Summers

Question: When a drop goal is deflected by a defending player attempting to block the kick and the ball is made dead in the defending team's in-goal, what is the restart?

Jonathan Kaplan: Restart with a 5m scrum, attacking team's ball. Only when player is not attempting to play the ball will a 22m drop-out be awarded.

4. Name: Michael Neale-May

Question: My player is tackled, taken to ground and I go in support as the third man in a maul. A fourth player from the opposing side grabs me by the shoulders and throws me out of the maul. Is this permissible or must The fourth man bind onto the maul and drive me off? I am a light weight old man - sort of soft in the shorts sissy boy. Thanks.

Jonathan Kaplan: Yes. You may not throw opponent out of the maul.
