Dobson honoured

The man responsible for the content of this website, Paul Dobson, was honoured by South African Referees at a black tie dinner in Cape Town held on Thursday, June 10.

Dobson was made an Honorary Life Member of the referees body by Chairman Steve Meintjies and SA Referees Manager Andre Watson.

The occasion was the Western Province Rugby Referees Society annual black tie dinner. Dobson, who has already been made Honorary Life President of the WP body, served as its chairman from 1984-1999 during which he oversaw the unity of the refereeing bodies - accomplishing it a year ahead of schedule and oversaw a period of substantial transition. To this day it remains the biggest referees society in the country.

Dobson was a Currie Cup referee, refereeing some sixty-odd first-class matches. He is a father figure to many of South African rugby referees and a confidante of the likes of Watson, Tappe Henning and Jonathan Kaplan, who was the guest speaker at the function and brilliantly interviewed by Dobson.

The dinner itself was held at Kelvin Grove - a classy, packed function that was brilliantly put together by the human dynamo that is Ben Theron who is the WP Refs Manager and his Chairman, Dan de Villiers.

They hold an annual dinner just before a Newlands Test each year and it proves a popular, enjoyable fundraiser for the society that every Saturday services well over 120 clubs and schools. Remarkable.

Once again Sindile Mayende, such a promising young referee, answers readers' questions. He would love a question in Xhosa!
