Q&A: Crouse to Burger

Luke Burger and Ben Crouse are both Pretoria schoolmasters and both on South Africa's provincial panel. They ask questions of each other so that we can get to know them better.

Ben Crouse is originally from the Eastern Cape, the son of a well-known referee, Bennie Crouse.

First Luke Burger asked questions of Ben Crouse, now it is vice versa.

This time Ben asks Luke questions. Luke started the year badly with tickbite fever but he is back in action.

Ben Crouse: Where were you born?

Luke Burger (pictured): East London, home of the Border Bulldogs.

Ben Crouse: Why and when did you start refereeing?

Luke Burger: It’s just something I always wanted to do. I think it was in 2004 or 2005 that I started. I first had to calm down. I used to be one of those typical armchair supporters who give the refs grief all the time.

Ben Crouse: Ever regretted that you became a referee?

Luke Burger: Never.

Ben Crouse: What do you enjoy most of being a referee?

Luke Burger: Being out in the middle and involved with such a great game. I enjoy the many challenges and pressures that it provides us as referees.

Ben Crouse: What do you do for a living?

Luke Burger: Sports Coordinator at Cornwall Hill College in Pretoria.

Ben Crouse: What do you do if not busy refereeing, or busy with school activities?

Luke Burger: There’s very little free time in between the two but if there is, some golf with mates, or a good social braai

Ben Crouse: Did you play rugby before refereeing? What position and where?

Luke Burger: I played centre at school and University (Tuks).

Ben Crouse: What school where you at?

Luke Burger: Willowridge High School

Ben Crouse: What until now was your highlight in your refereeing career?

Luke Burger: Definitely being promoted to the Provincial Panel.

Ben Crouse: More or less how many rugby games do you officiate in a year? (Ref+Ar1+Ar2)

Luke Burger: I'm not a mathematics teacher so it will take me a while to try and add up. I'm sure the figure is a three-digit one...

Ben Crouse: How many times do you train per week?

Luke Burger: I try for at least four times a week, mixed with some sprint sessions and interval training

Ben Crouse: Are you on any special diet to stay in shape?

Luke Burger: Round is also a shape, so no I don't. I just try and eat healthily in general

Ben Crouse: Who is your role model if any?

Luke Burger: Any successful international sportsman who is overcome any obstacles in life.
