Q&A: TMO to TMO, Part II

This is the second half of the TMO asking TM0, Johann Meuwesen asking Shaun Veldsman, both former Test referees, both specialised TMOs.

Johann Meuwesen: How would you describe yourself in the personal column of a newspaper?

Shaun Veldsman (pictured, right): Handsome,  and  the  kind  of  son  a  mother-in -law  would  be  crazy about

Johann Meuwesen: Where and when did your refereeing career started?

Shaun Veldsman:   I  refereed  a  little  in  the  old  dispensation (SARU). Very  1st  game  Slangrivier  vs  Sea  Gulls  from  Struisbaai.  Stopped  and  then  became  serious  in  1997.

Johann Meuwesen:
Single out the highlight of your reffing career.

Shaun Veldsman:   There  are  many. The  Currie  Cup  Final  in  2003  definitely  stands  out. My  first  game  as  TMO  in  the  Tri-Nations  also  in  2003  in  the  magnificent  Telstra  Stadium  in  Sydney. Running  touch  in  Wellington  - New Zealand  vs  Australia  with  Mark  Lawrence. We  were  very  cold  and  soaking  wet  that  day.

Johann Meuwesen: Do you still maintain a training program?

Shaun Veldsman:   Yes,  I  love  cycling,  so I  am  on  the Bicycle  almost  every  day  and  still  do  some  training  with  the  Under-15  rugby  team  I  help  to  coach

Johann Meuwesen: What do you enjoy the most of being a TMO?

Shaun Veldsman:   Being  on  the  spot -  the  pressure,  definitely.  I  am  still  very  nervous  before  a  game  as  if  I  am  going  to  referee  the  game

Johann Meuwesen: Do you think that the TMO will play a bigger part in the future?

Shaun Veldsman:   I  surely  hope  so.  However  I  do  think  that  in  order  for  TMOs  to be  100%  spot  on,  we  need  to  have  more  cameras  overhead.  We  have  the  technology  currently  and  we  must  ensure  that  we   use  it  appropriately

Johann Meuwesen: Any advise to younger referees?

Shaun Veldsman:   Stay  focussed. Never  think  that  you  have  arrived  at  any  given  moment. There  is  a  saying  that you  have  to  do  it  by  yourself,  but  you  cannot  do  it  alone

Johann Meuwesen: How big is your collection of wine?

Shaun Veldsman:   Fairly  big,  The  biggest  contributor  to  that  is  the  Western  Province  Referees  Society

Johann Meuwesen: Who is the funniest referee you've met?

Shaun Veldsman:  Hey  there  are  a lot,  but  I  think  the  guy  who  stands  out  by  miles  will  be..................Nicolas  Frans  from  the  South Western Districts. He  is  now  the  presenter  of  a  show  on  a  local  community  radio  station  in  George  and  guess  what kind  of  show   that is.....  yes,  a  show  called  Sout  Manne  Sout

Johann Meuwesen: Excluding your family, who will you take on a island trip?

Shaun Veldsman:  Oh  my  gosh.  I  am  a  frequent  visitor  in  the  lovely  country  of  Argentina  ......  you  guess  who  I  take  with  me

Johann Meuwesen: Will you bare it all for animal welfare?

Shaun Veldsman:  I  have  two  dogs -  not  cross  breeds -  Jack  Russell  and  Rotweiler.    and  I  kind  of  feel  it  for  the  animals.

Johann Meuwesen: Good luck

Cheers

JM
