Clip 5 - 24 January 2012

Lazy runner.

Saracens play Benetton Treviso. Peter Stringer, scrumhalf for Saracens, waits some time before picking up the ball from a tackle/ruck. He then kicks downfield where another ruck occurs. This time Stringer clears quickly, passing straight at Corniel van Zyl of Treviso who is penalised for offside.

Tough call?

The fact is that he is in an offside position. But it was the speed of play that got him there.
He was in the way of the pass. But he was making his way to get onside, as the laws required him to do.
He interfered with play.

But what could he have done.

He could have anticipated what Stringer would do and then taken evasive action instead of plodding straight ahead.

Three questions for Stuart Berry to answer. One disagrees with an IRB clarification, another disagrees with Stuart's previous answer and a third of practical application.
