Clip 6 - 24 January 2012

A regular error.

Riccardo Croy of Boland Cavaliers kicks out on the full. Bolla Conradie grabs the ball in touch and runs up towards the half-way line, clearly looking for a quick throw-in. But the nearer he gets to the half-way line, the further his chances of a quick throw-in recede.

It is a common misconception that a quick throw-in replaces a line-out. A quick throw-in has a life of its own. The place for a quick throw-in does not necessarily happen where a line-out would have been.

In this case the line-out option is on the half-way line. But that is not where the quick throw-in could take place.

Law 19.2 QUICK THROW-IN
(b)  For a quick throw-in, the player may be anywhere outside the field of play between the place where the ball went into touch and the player’s goal line.

In other words the quick throw-in in this case could happen between the place where Conradie grabbed the ball in touch and the Stormers' goal-line'

Three questions for Stuart Berry to answer. One disagrees with an IRB clarification, another disagrees with Stuart's previous answer and a third of practical application.
