Cl;ip 7 - 1 September

Would you penalise this?

Western Province attack the Free State line and go left where Paul Bosch darts ahead. Francois Louw, who was on Bosch's left, gets ahead of Bosch and in the way of Tewis de Bruyn, the Free State scrumhalf, who throws up his hands in protest.

The referee penalises Louw.

Would you do so?

Obviously play could not continue because Louw had been in the way, but clearly it is an accident of timing. Louw was clearly not going ahead to clean De Bruyn out and create a path for Bosch.

Bosch makes contact with Louw. Louw did not want Bosch to make contact with him.

Law 11.6 ACCIDENTAL OFFSIDE
(a) When an offside player cannot avoid being touched by the ball or by a team-mate carrying it, the player is accidentally offside. If the player's team gains no advantage from this, play continues. If the player's team gains an advantage, a scrum is formed with the opposing team throwing in the ball.

Go back to the previous clip and compare.
