Clip 3 - 19 August

Murder? It may be an exaggeration!

Near his own 10-metre line Willem de Waal kicks towards the touch-line on his right. The ball goes out.

The referee's assistant hesitates and then gives the line-out where the ball went out while John Mametsa and Zane Kirchner of the Blue Bulls look on in indignation.

It's not always easy to be an assistant referee. The ball went out. He could not just stand there and hope that somebody else would make the decision. He had to make it on his own without the benefit of replay.

If the ball had struck the line, the line-out would have been on the Western Province 10-metre line.
If the ball had bounced inside the field of play and then gone out then the assistant referee was right.
