Knock, knock - but not on.
Australia attack and Matt Giteau's gets the defence nervous before passing to his right. The ball bounces on the ground as Drew Mitchell come racing in. The ball almost eludes him but he hits it up with his left hand twice and then grabs it with his right hand, by which time he is over the line and simply falls to ground for the try.
This clip is really for those ancient of days who remember that even the slightest fumble was a knock-on till 1958 when an adjustment was allowed but the 'cricket catch' was introduced only in the 1970s.
Law 12 DEFINITION
A knock-on occurs when a player loses possession of the ball and it goes forward, or when a player hits the ball forward with the hand or arm, or when the ball hits the hand or arm and goes forward, and the ball touches the ground or another player before the original player can catch it.
‘Forward’ means towards the opposing
team’s dead ball line.
In this case the ball did not touch the ground or an opponent before Mitchell caught it.
