Clip 10 - 28 July

Back and forth. In and out.

From inside his 22 Louis Ludik of the Golden Lions kicks a long way downfield. The ball goes into touch about 10 metres outside the Griquas 22 where Rian Viljoen of Griquas fields the ball. In touch he runs down the touch-line to about five metres inside his 22 and passes to flyhalf Naas Olivier who moves forward and at the 22 kicks the ball a long way down the field. It goes out on the full about a metre outside the Golden Lions 22 where Ludik fields it. Ludik immediately passes infield to Herkie Kruger and the referee urges play on.

It is an interesting situation.

When Olivier is about to kick the ball the referee calls, more than once: "Taken back."

But Viljoen was inside his 22 when he passed the ball. But he had collected the ball outside the 22. He had taken it back.

Law 19.1 (b) When a team causes the ball to be put into their own 22. When a defending player plays the ball from outside the 22 and it goes into that player’s 22 or in-goal area without touching an opposition player and then that player or another player from that team kicks the ball directly into touch before it touches an opposition player, or a tackle takes place or a ruck or maul is formed, there is no gain in ground. This applies when a defending player moves back behind the 22 metre line to take a quick throw-in and then the ball is kicked directly into touch.

Olivier kicked it out on the full, but Ludik, about 50 metres down the field opted for the quick throw-in. The quick throw-in was correct and the referee allowed play to go on.

If the Golden Lions had not opted for the quick throw-in but had wanted the line-out, where would the line-out have been?

Where Viljoen caught the ball? Where Viljoen passed the ball? Where Olivier kicked the ball?

It would have been opposite the place where Olivier kicked the ball, more or less on the Griqua 22.

Should the referee not have stopped play as the Golden Lions were playing about 50 metres behind where they needed to play. Does not advantage apply?

No. There has not been an infringement and the Golden Lions had acted correctly in taking the quick throw-in.  Clearly the voice of the referee was not heard all that way down the field.
