Clip 3 - 21 July

Tip tackle.

The players to watch are Rene Ranger and Jean de Villiers.

Ma'a Nonu throws a long pass to Ranger who is immediately tackled by De Villiers and loses the ball which Pierre Spies snatches up.

It is a quick passage of play but see how De Villiers tackles. He stands upright and tips Ranger so that his feet are above the horizontal.

No action is taken possibly because the tackle was not noticed in the flurry of activity around it but the citing commissioner spotted it, cited De Villiers and the player was suspended for two weeks.

Fair enough?

Law 10.4 (j) Lifting a player from the ground and dropping or driving that player into the ground whilst that player’s feet are still off the ground such that the player’s head and/or upper body come into contact with the ground first is dangerous play.
Sanction: Penalty kick

The IRB has issued instructions about the "tip tackle":

Dangerous Tackles – To be treated at the upper end of foul play scale (red card, and work down, not the reverse)
·  High
·  No Arms
·  Spear
·  Tackle on the collar
·  Any player who puts a player in the air or caused a player to be put in the air has a responsibility to ensure that the player is brought to the ground safely.

The IRB has a suggested tariff of punishments.

Lifting a Player from the ground and either dropping or driving that Player’s head and/or upper body first into the ground whilst the Player’s feet are off the ground

Recommended suspension depending on gravity:

Lower end: 3 weeks
Mid range: 6 weeks
Top end: 10+ weeks
Maximum: 52 weeks

De Villiers  had a good disciplinary record and so his two-week suspension is even lower than the lowest IRB recommendation.
