Clip 7 - 21 July

Throwing away - again.

Naas Ferreira kicks high and Bjorn Basson chases. The ball bounces, it strikes a head and Basson takes it out. He is lying on his back in touch when Hennie Daniller of the Free State arrives to pick the ball up. Basson throw it away out of Daniller's reach.

The referee penalises Basson 15 metres in from touch.

Right?

Law 19.2 (i) If a player carrying the ball is forced into touch, that player must release the ball to an opposition player so that there can be a quick throw-in.
Sanction: Penalty kick on 15-metre line

The referee was right.

There was a consequence to all this. Free State kicked out and had a line-out 30 metres or so further downfield from where they would have had one if Basson had not been silly. Free State were now on the attack from which Coenie Oosthuizen scored a try.
