Clip 9 - 21 July

Air collision

Riaan Viljoen of Griquas kicks high and Bjorn Basson chases. Basson gets to where the ball is dropping and leaps for the ball. Ashley Johnson of Free State charges forward, leaps and collides in the air with Basson who is hurt. The ball drops behind the colliding pair and Hennie Daniller of Free State catches it.

The referee penalises Johnson and sends him to the sin bin.

The referee says it all - dangerous play and obstruction.

Johnson could possibly think of pleading jumping for the ball. But look at the two jumpers. Basson is jumping straight up with his hands up. He could catch the ball. Johnson is jumping forward into Basson and his hands are not up. He could not catch the ball.

Law 10.4 (i) Tackling the jumper in the air. A player must not tackle nor tap, push or pull the foot or feet of an opponent jumping for the ball in a line-out or in open play.
Sanction: Penalty kick

The referee does not have to read minds - simply look at what the player is doing and how he does it.
