Out of the mouth.
Tertius Carse, the Free State scrumhalf, puts the ball into a scrum. The ball comes straight out of the tunnel and livewire Sarel Pretorius snatches it up and hares off towards the Free State line.
This sets the Griquas attacking and it is profitable for them as it sets up an easy penalty for Naas Olivier which gave them a losers' bonus point.
But should they have got it?
Law 20.7 WHEN THE SCRUM BEGINS
(b) If the scrum half throws in the ball and it comes out at either end of the tunnel, the ball must be thrown in again unless a free kick or penalty has been awarded.
There should have been a second scrum to Free State.
Look where the referee is. He is on the far side of the scrum - not a good view even if he bent down. But, in this age when each set of backs is back five metres from the scrum, one would have thought that the assistant could well have had a good view. After all the scrum is only 15 metres in from touch.
