Clip 12 - 21 July

Up she goes!

The Blue Bulls put the ball in a scrum and the Sharks get a shove on. Two of the Bulls in the front row - Bees Roux and hooker Gary Botha go up into the air. Roux may stand up but Botha remains caught in the scrum, his lower body rising into the air.

The referee penalises the Sharks for pushing up.

Law 20.3 (i)  Player forced upwards. If a player in a scrum is lifted in the air or is forced upwards out of the scrum, the referee must blow the whistle immediately so that players stop pushing.

Clearly Botha is forced upwards. He did not get into that position of his own accord nor did he pull out of anything. He was forced upwards.

Even if a team is stronger - as the Sharks are at this scrum - they must scrum legally.
