Blown back.
Those who know the University of Cape Town's Groote Schuur field, will know that the wind there is stronger than anywhere else in the world and it blows, from the south or from the north, straight down the field.
Here, in a Varsity Cup match UCT play against the Tswane University of Technology. UCT are playing into a mad southeaster. Marcel Brache kicks off and the ball travels high beyond TUT's 10-metre line. The South Easter has its way and the ball curls back to UCT where their No.8 JJ Gagiano catches the ball and starts driving forward.
The referee blows his whistle and offers TUT the option - of a kick again or a scrum.
The UCT players are nonplussed and query the referee.
What about the ball that crosses the plane of the 10-metre line and is then blown back in the direction whence it came?
13.5 KICK-OFF OF 10 METRES
If the ball reaches the opponents’ 10-metre line or
reaches the 10-metre line and is blown back, play continues.
In this case play should have continued.
