You be the referee: U19 Variations

The questions here pertain only to the Under-19 variations, but lots of people play, watch and referee matches played by boys and girls younger than 19. In each one we shall remind that these are Under-19 matches, played at Danie Week between Meerkatte and Outer Transvalia.

You are the referee. You make the decisions.

Unlike real referees you have time, you are not sweaty, nobody is shouting or throwing things at you, there are no players in your way - and so you have no excuse for getting less than 100%.

Please, don't look at the answers before you have answered the question! (Referees do not cheat!)

It's time... For you to be the Ref:

1. Meerkatte Under-18 play Outer Transvalia Under-18 at Okapi Park Sportsgrounds. In the second half Peter Mongoos, the Meerkatte coach, takes off the scrumhalf Fourie Goodfellow and replaces him with Ricky May. Five minutes later May is injured and cannot continue playing. Mongoos sends Goodfellow back onto the field.

You will:
a. allow him back
b. not allow him back.

2. Meerkatte lock Andries Mouther is naughty and sent to the sin bin. Soon afterwards there is a scrum to the Meerkatte. They have only seven players in the scrum. Outer Transvalia go down with a full pack of eight.

You will:
a. allow this
b. not allow it

3. Meerkatte put the ball into a scrum and John Talon heels. The scrum becomes unstable and wheels to 46 degrees. The you stop the scrum and resets it.

You give the put-in to:
a. Meerkatte
b. Outer Transvalia

4. Meerkatte put the ball into a scrum and John Talon heels. The scrum stays straight and the ball goes back to Pierre Javelin at eighthman. He keeps the ball at his feet as Meerkatte get a short shove on.

You will:
a.
allow the scrum to continue
b. reset the scrum, Meerkatte to pout in
c. reset the scrum, Outer Transvalia to pout in
d. award a free kick to Outer Transvalia

5. Meerkatte put the ball into a scrum and John Talon heels. Outer Transvalia move their feet and tug to get the scrum to wheel.

You will:
a. allow play to go on
b. penalise Outer Transvalia
c. award a free kick to Meerkatte
d. reset the scrum, Meerkatte to put in
e. reset the scrum, Outer Transvalia to put in

6. Meerkatte put the ball into a scrum and John Talon heels. Outer Transvalia get a shove on and push Meerkatte back two metres.

You will:
a.
allow play to go on
b. penalise Outer Transvalia
c. award a free kick to Meerkatte
d. reset the scrum, Meerkatte to put in
e. reset the scrum, Outer Transvalia to put in

7. Meerkatte put the ball into a scrum and John Talon heels. Meerkatte get a shove on and push Outer Transvalia back two metres.

You will:
a. allow play to go on
b. penalise Meerkatte
c. award a free kick to Outer Transvalia
d. reset the scrum, Meerkatte to put in
e. reset the scrum, Outer Transvalia to put in

8. In a cup match, the scores at the end of 70 minutes are tied.

You:
a.
allow 5 minutes each way as extra time
b. allow 10 minutes each way as extra time
c. play sudden death
d. end the match

9. At the first scrum of the match, the Meerkatte pack down 3-3-2.

You will:
a. allow play to go on
b. require Meerkatte to change to 3-4-1.

10. Meerkatte have a prop in the sin bin and another one injured. They have no other props. You order uncontested scrums. Meerkatte put the ball in, Neither side pushes but Keven Claw of Outer Transvalia hooks the ball.

You will:
a.
allow play to go on
b. stop the scrum and reset it

On 27 March 2010 Pieter de Villiers and Madél Herselman were married. That happens to lots of people but less often to referees, both of them on provincial panels of South African Referees' Association.
